Active Release Technique™

trigger-points

Active Release Technique™ (ART) is a soft tissue system/movement based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves. ART is often the main soft tissue treatment for collegiate, professional, and Olympic athletes.

At the Athletic Strength Institute we combine injury prevention/rehabilitation training strategies with Active Release Technique™ to restore proper muscle and joint function, eliminate pain, and enhance the effectiveness of our training programs.

Active Release Technique™ can help reduce and/or eliminate musculoskeletal dysfunction and pain associated with, but not limited to:
- Headaches
- Back pain
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Shin splints
- Shoulder pain
- Sciatica
- Plantar fasciitis
- Knee problems
- Tennis elbow

What is an overuse injury? These conditions are often a result of overused muscles. Overuse injuries typically occur from working muscles in the same way repeatedly and are common in sports that have repetitive movement patterns, such as swimming or running.

The chronic overuse of muscles often causes injuries that can occur in three ways:
- Acute trauma (pulls, tears, collisions, etc.)
- Accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma)
- Hypoxia (not getting enough oxygen to an area)

This trauma can cause the formation of adhesions/scar tissue, which can then negatively affect the way a joint works often resulting in pain. ART™ frees the soft tissue of these adhesions and scar tissue allowing the tissue to move freely and restoring proper joint function.

Chiropractic

chiropractic-services-lawrence-kansas
Statistically, chiropractic adjustments/mobilizations are one of the most cost effective treatment procedures for spinal and extremity dysfunction and pain relief.

Our chiropractic care at the Athletic Strength Institute in Lawrence, KS focuses on proper joint and muscular function, which is critical to proper movement.

The human body needs to move efficiently to live and perform well. Improper motion of a joint can cause pain and negatively impact the function of the surrounding muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments, and fascia.

Chiropractic treatment has grown significantly and has continued to be at the forefront as the manual therapy of choice for alternative care around the world.

Chiropractic adjustments and mobilizations are vital to restore the natural function and health of many neuromusculoskeletal conditions. Learn more about our onsite Chiropractor, Britton J. Horton, DC here.

Dry Needling

acupuncture lawrence kansas
Dry needling focuses on the reduction and elimination of trigger points by inserting thin acupuncture needles into a trigger point to relieve the shortening and hardening of muscles, tendons, or other tissues.
What is a trigger point?
Trigger points are hyperirritable areas within tight muscles that cause pain that is referred to other areas of the body. These trigger points generally consist of only a few muscle fibers with a decreased threshold to pain.
Trigger points contract first before the rest of the muscle, which causes an imbalance within the muscle. This imbalance between muscle fibers can cause pain that is felt along a muscle and/or joint, in an area of the body other than where pressure is applied.

How does dry needling work?
The altered activity causes improper joint function, which leads to joint surface irritation, inflammation, and finally pain. Dry needling works by reestablishing how the brain and muscles communicate, which can then re-establish proper muscle function and correct joint position.

Dry needling has also been found to be effective in reducing local inflammation and improve tissue healing. Evidence supports that this is due to increased circulation to the site of trauma that reduces inflammation and promotes healing.

Graston and FAKTR (Functional and Kinetic Treatment with Rehab)

faktr graston Graston and FAKTR (Functional and Kinetic Treatment with Rehab) are instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) techniques that focus on the break down of scar tissue and fascial restrictions and the restoration of proper function to the soft tissue (muscles, tendons, fascia) and injured joint.

Conditions that improve with IASTM include, but are not limited to:

- Knee pain;
- Shoulder pain;
- Plantar fasciitis;
- Shoulder pain;
- IT Band Syndrome;
- Epicondylitis, and;
- Tight and tender muscles

What makes Graston and FAKTR different?
These IASTM techniques utilize specially designed stainless steel instruments to detect and treat areas exhibiting soft tissue fibrosis, adhesions, and/or chronic inflammation.
IASTM induces a mild state of inflammation within the treatment area to improve the natural healing process of the tissue. The human body is incredibly adaptive. There can often be dysfunctions within the musculoskeletal system that may not cause pain for years. If left untreated, these dysfunctions begin to damage the surrounding joints and muscles. Consistent soft tissue treatment combined with the appropriate exercise progressions can expedite the rehab process and prevent further injuries. Graston and FAKTR techniques are two highly effective soft tissue treatment protocols that can keep the soft tissues of your body healthy and you performing your best.

Kinesiology & Rock Taping

physio tape Taping is the application of elastic adhesive tape that helps eliminate pain and aid in proper muscle, ligament, tendon, and joint function. There are many different elastic tape brands and techniques including KT tape, Kinesio Tape, Rocktape, Spider Tech, Theraband, and SPRT to name a few of the more well-known.

While clinical results have been successful, research is currently exploring additional benefits of KT taping. KT tape has revolutionized therapeutic treatment and the care between visits from everyday individuals to high performing athletes.

How it Works

There are several different types of sensory fibers in our body, which travel at different speeds. When pain fibers are stimulated, a signal travels to the brain at a specific speed. The sensory fibers stimulated from the tape travel at a greater velocity to the brain than the pain fibers. As a result, the sensory fibers block the sensation of pain.

Added benefits of elastic tape allow soft tissue and joints to move more freely without adding bulky wraps or heavy braces (as seen with traditional athletic tape). KT taping also provides a more effective and natural healing process.

The correct taping procedure and technique can aid in many situations including, but not limited to:

- Low back pain;
- Knee pain
- Shin splints
- Tennis elbow
- Shoulder pain, and;
- Plantar fasciitis.
