Active Release Techniques® (ART) is a soft tissue system/movement based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves. We integrate injury prevention/rehabilitation training strategies with Active Release Techniques® to enhance the effectiveness of our training programs. These conditions include, but are not limited to:

  • Headaches
  • Back pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Shin splints
  • Shoulder pain
  • Sciatica
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Knee problems
  • Tennis elbow

These conditions are often a result of overused muscles. Overuse injuries typically occur in three ways:

  • Acute trauma (pulls, tears, collisions, etc.)
  • Accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma)
  • Hypoxia (not getting enough oxygen to an area)

This trauma can cause the formation of adhesions/scar tissue in the affected tissue. As scar tissue accumulates it restricts tissues that should move freely. Over time this restriction in movement causes muscles to become weaker and the resulting tension on tendons can cause tendonitis.

ART can restore proper movement and function to the affected areas by manually “releasing” the adhesions/scar tissue that have accumulated in the affected tissues. Ensuring tissues of the body are free of scar tissue means they are able to move freely thereby maximizing the training process and optimizing performance. The Myokinesthetic System – Myo = muscke, Kinesthetic = movement

– is a soft tissue treatment option that focuses on muscle, soft tissue, and nerves. The goal of the Myokinesthetic System is to identify and address the cause of the problem within the nervous system.
Through a postural assessment the nerve root that is causing the problem is identified. By stimulating all of the muscles associated with a particular nerve root, the nervous system learns to send the proper signal to the muscles allowing them to respond and function properly – with a full range of motion and without tension and pain.

Restoring a full range of motion to a muscle ensures proper functioning thereby maximizing the training process and optimizing performance.

The Myokinesthetic System can:

  • Alleviate (and even eliminate) pain
  • Restore range of motion
  • Improve posture

The Theory and Philosophy of the Technique

Sports massage therapy is generally recognized as an important part of an athlete’s training program – from world-class professionals to weekend warriors. Sports massage techniquesfocus on the areas of the body that experience the most “wear and tear” from the repetitive movements that characterize many sports and professions.

Integrating sports massage therapy as part of our approach to training improves an athlete’s flexibility and reduces recovery time thereby maximizing performance during training. Sports massage therapy also reduces fatigue, improves endurance, and helps prevent injuries.

For anyone participating in regular physical activity, sports massage therapy every week or two is a great adjunct to any training program. To see all of our available service, visit this page.
