Active Release Techniques® (ART) is a soft tissue system/movement based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves. We integrate injury prevention/rehabilitation training strategies with Active Release Techniques® to enhance the effectiveness of our training programs. These conditions include, but are not limited to:
- Back pain
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Shin splints
- Shoulder pain
- Plantar fasciitis
- Knee problems
- Tennis elbow
These conditions are often a result of overused muscles. Overuse injuries typically occur in three ways:
- Acute trauma (pulls, tears, collisions, etc.)
- Accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma)
- Hypoxia (not getting enough oxygen to an area)
This trauma can cause the formation of adhesions/scar tissue in the affected tissue. As scar tissue accumulates it restricts tissues that should move freely. Over time this restriction in movement causes muscles to become weaker and the resulting tension on tendons can cause tendonitis.
ART can restore proper movement and function to the affected areas by manually “releasing” the adhesions/scar tissue that have accumulated in the affected tissues. Ensuring tissues of the body are free of scar tissue means they are able to move freely thereby maximizing the training process and optimizing performance.
